East Yorkshire Landmarks Get Necessary Makeovers

Two historic community landmarks in Humberside are currently undergoing thousands of pounds worth of repairs to help preserve them for future generations.

St Patrick’s Church in Patrington, which dates back to the 15th Century, is being restored to its former glory as part of a £150,000 renovation project.  Stone Technical Services, a North East-based company, is carrying out high level spire and stone carvings repairs as well as specialised pinnacle renewal at the church.

The work, costing in the region of £150,000, is being funded by English Heritage and is due to be finished by March 2009.

Stone, who is working with Matthew Thomas Architects in Alysham, Norfolk, carried out extensive repair work on St Patrick’s in 2008 following the much-publicised earthquake. Patrington was close to the epicentre and the church suffered spire and pinnacle damage.

In Hessle, Stone Technical Services is working with specialist architects Peter Gaze Pace, from York, to rebuild the spire on All Saints Church, which has been at the centre of community life for over four centuries. During the 1800s All Saints was restored and extended to accommodate a congregation of around 1000. The work at All Saints, costing in the region of £15,000, is being funded by the Church Parish Council and should be complete by April.

Stone Technical Services specialises in the restoration of churches and historic buildings as well as high level maintenance, safety systems, lightning conductor installation and services related to industrial steeplejacks.

The company regularly carries out specialist projects for English Heritage, the National Trust and local councils and is the appointed contractor managing structural and high level maintenance repairs and lightning conductor installations at St Paul’s Cathedral

David Stone, who runs the Darlington-based company with his brother Grahame, commented: “Both St Patrick’s and All Saints have played important roles in their local communities for many years. It’s important that their magnificent structures are delicately maintained so that they can be enjoyed by generations to come. Our skills are in high demand across East Yorkshire which is fortunate enough to be home to some of the most stunning historic architecture.”
